What does “Brand Photography” actually mean?
When I am at a Networking event or just out in public in general and I tell someone that I am a Brand Photographer they often ask me what that means. They say “so you are a headshot photographer?”
The answer is yes, but it is also more than just your headshots. Let’s talk about what “Brand Photography” actually is and what it is not.
Brand photography by dictionary definition is - “the process of creating custom, professional images that represent a business's identity, values, and story”
But it still goes further than that. Brand photography provides a visually curated library of images, that is designed for digital and physical marketing materials so that you can build trust and establish genuine connections with your intended audience. It goes beyond headshots, by creating visual content that is purpose driven, consistent, and authentic.
What are the different sub groups under brand photography then? And why should it matter to me?
Professional Headshots - polished headshot photos that can be used for your website, social medias and more.
Lifestyle & Action Shots - In action waist up shots, in action crop below nose shots, far away foreground layering (ex. shot from behind a plant).
Products, Details, & Environment - You can bring props/things that you work with on a normal basis (ex. computer or industry tools), and we can capture little details like your best marketing materials. We can capture shots of the environment in which you work in as well so that your ideal client can see the area in which you might perform the specific service you offer.
Behind the Scenes - behind the scenes of super close up of hands working on something or details over the shoulder.
So what is Brand Photography not?
Well, some people have said to me, “Regan, isn’t that basically commercial photography?”
The short answer is no. It’s related to commercial photography. Commercial Photography is geared towards big companies, corporations, and large popular brands.
Brand photography is geared more towards small businesses and solo entrepreneurs. Brand photos provide a more personable photos for small businesses.
If you want to learn more about how I go about doing brand photography for my clients check out this blog about the Fortis process. If you aren’t sure still how a brand photographer can help your business check out this other blog we made about the ways that brand photographers actually help small businesses.
In summary . . .
Brand photography goes beyond headshots by creating a cohesive, purpose driven library of images that reflect your business, values, and story. It includes everything from lifestyle and behind the scenes moments to product details and workspace visuals, all designed to help you build trust and connect with your audience.
Unlike commercial photography, which targets large corporations, brand photography is tailored for small businesses and entrepreneurs who want authentic, impactful visuals that feel personal and true to their brand.
