How I stay Productive & Motivated as a Small Business Owner
Running a small business comes with a never-ending to-do list, and staying productive can sometimes feel like a challenge. It’s easy to get caught up in busywork or feel overwhelmed by all the moving parts. That’s why I’m sharing my top five go-to strategies that help me stay focused, motivated, and actually move the needle in my business.
Tip #1: This is still something that I struggle with as a business owner, but this is one of the big tips that I tell anyone looking to start a business. LIMIT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CONSUMPTION. I know that I am not the only one that struggles with this! Anytime I get on social media I too get sucked into the vortex that is social media. Trying to keep up with the latest social trends is exhausting as a small business owner. Which is why I use scheduling tools to help me be more efficient when I need to post content for my social media.
Tip #2: Take breaks frequently and go for walks. When I am home trying to get work done for my business one of the things that I found helps me re-focus is taking my dog Rogue for a walk during the day. Leaving and coming back to your work helps you to not only get a quick break but also helps you to re-adjust your focus and make sure that you are staying on task.
Tip #3: Creating a Schedule and sticking to it. When I create a schedule for things that must be done, I make sure that I stick to that schedule. Granted, if there is an emergency or a client project needs to be moved or extended then I do make adjustments. But other wise when I create my weekly calendar, everything has a time and place in my schedule from my business to the personal side, so that I never feel like I am falling behind. Monday’s are for creating marketing content. Tuesday’s are grocery day. Wednesday is networking day (as a lot of the regular networking events I go to fall on Wednesday’s). Thursday’s is Leads group day and so on and so forth.
Tip #4: On top of going for walks frequently, I have been trying to make a habit out of going to the gym a few times a week. Even if it’s just for a little bit. Going to the gym and doing some more intense exercise helps reset my brain and make me feel more energetic to face harder days. If you don’t go regularly, I challenge you to start a new habit.
Tip #5: Have a work day with other business owners. This is something I started to do in the middle of last year (2025). I get together at least once a week with another local business owner in my area (I post about it on my Instagram stories a lot). During that time we sit, drink coffee, bounce ideas off each other, write blogs, update our websites, do client work or whatever it is that we need to catch up on. We have a designated 3-4 hours of focused time to just work on our businesses. This is something that I never would have thought would be a benefit to me, but it has seriously helped me be more intentional with the way I use my time.
The biggest takeaway is this: it is normal to lose momentum sometimes, but you can always build it back. Start by implementing just one of these strategies this week and make it part of your regular routine. Small, consistent shifts can create serious forward movement in your business.
