How to post about your life as a entrepreneur, while still protecting your privacy

Posting about your life when you run a small business often times doesn’t seem like it’s necessary. We think, “My clients just want to see the business side” or “They just want to see how my business works behind the scenes.”

While you audience does of course want to see all the behind the scenes of the business, they are also in part there because of you, the individual running the business. They want to know what your daily routine is. They want to know what inspires you. They want to know what you do outside of your business. They want to know how you had your coffee this morning (yes, they really do). And often times, we find that it’s a hard balance. I know I certainly struggle with this too.

I recently shared on my Instagram and Facebook that I had just recently accomplished half of one of my goals for 2026. And that was to stay consistent on social media. I had posted consistently on social media, sent out email newsletters, made updates on Google Business profile, for 33 weeks straight. No breaks. No exceptions. Consistency is always something I have struggled with when it comes to marketing and I was so grateful and thankful for the discipline the Lord gave me to push myself to be consistent. Part of that consistency was being able to post on my social media stories regularly (varied from 1-3 times a day) to show my audience that I was actively showing up, and not hiding away.

Now, if you know anything about Instagram, you know that your stories are usually more casual than your typical posts. Your stories are where you share more personal things with your audience. It’s where you connect with them on a deeper level. You go past the business stuff and share the more personable and real side of yourself. You allow people into your orbit.

This is where a lot of business owners I serve get stuck. They say, “I don’t want to share more about my personal life, because that’s too private.” “I am not interested in letting my clients see my non-professional side.”

This mentality is what keeps business owners stuck. We are all human. We don’t always need to be “turned on” and ready to go for our clients. At that point, you aren’t living. You are drowning, and letting your work and your business take you down deeper and deeper under water. People want to see people be people. Most of your ideal clients want to know you deeper than the surface level business stuff. And if you don’t let that personable, non-business side of you shine (at least every once in a while), you lose touch with your people. They think “All she wants to talk about is her business” or “All her posts are about buying the stuff she sells.”

There is a way to share your life as an entrepreneur, while still protecting your privacy. You aren’t just a business owner. You are a mother. You are a father. You are someone’s son or daughter. You have a home to take care. You have pets that want your love. You have hobbies that you enjoy. You have places and things you want to do. You are more than your business. So share those things with your clients.

And there are ways to protect your private life and still share little bits and pieces here and there. You want to share about your kids, but don’t want to plaster their faces all over your pages? Share photos of the backs of their heads, or share photos of the place you are at. Cover their faces with heart emojis.

You want to share your hobbies. Take a quick pic related to your hobby, but don’t share too many details about the hobby. Maybe you want to share a story about your family member. Share a behind the scenes photo of something that is sort of related but not directly associated with that family member or the circumstances.

There are ways to protect your personal life while still sharing your life with your clients (and future clients). I challenge you to share a personal story about your life, that maybe had a direct impact on you or how you run your business and be intentional about how you share it. Choose your words (and your images) carefully. And watch the connections that are made from it.
